Common feature: Horizontal design 
Speaking of the design of the heavy duty lathe machine, among the many different designs of the turning machine structures, one thing is common, that is, the horizontal arrangement of the spinning spindle that clamps the work piece which is to be processes by the cutting tools. Since a lathe machine is also called a turning machine, that is a machine tool that rotates a work piece on an axis of rotation to perform various machining operations such as cutting, knurling, sanding, drilling, deformation, facing, and turning; such machining are conducted with tools that are applied to the targeted work piece and to create an object with symmetry profile with the axis. Conventionally speaking, horizontal lathe models are the most commonly utilized designs for the heavy duty tasks because the loading issues can be dealt with in a much easier way, granting convenient machining processes for operators. 

CNC & Heavy duty applications
Regarding the structural design of the lathe machine, or say, turning machines, there are categories that are divided into two main types according to the way that clamp the work pieces. Those are vertical lathe and the horizontal counterparts. 

For the horizontal one, work pieces are clamped on the joint of the spindle, which is driven by a power output with belt-driven, direct-driven, or in-built motors by which the model of the driven power decides most of the processing advantages. 

In addition to the clamping mechanism, the hydraulic clamping force is triggered by the cylinder installed beside the spindle case for the chuck device in order to ensure the clamping force to be firmly fixed. In this way, the work piece would not go splitting up if the spinning speed is too fast, rendering unstable spinning movement. However, if the length of the work piece is too long, then there would be inevitably a straightness issue on the work piece, and there would be a tailstock at the end of the work piece to make sure the longer work piece is stabilized firmly from head to toe, making the tooling processing smooth and precise. 

For the machining of heavy duty to be possible the structure of horizontal model makes the operation much easier because it is more dynamic balanced to roll those work piece components and machinery accessories on the horizontal platform than on the vertical counterparts. Furthermore, regarding the vertical type CNC heavy duty lathe machine, the work piece is clamped vertically so that the cutting tool is equipped on the same direction and the machining is conducted vertically. 

Gravity issue helps in vertical models
On the other hand, though horizontal is a common model, vertical is also workable and widely accepted due to certain structural features. By this arrangement the clamping is much more stern and fixed due to the gravity effect compared to the horizontal methodology. Manufacturers of CNC vertical turning machines usually made their vertical turning machines into great manufacturing facilities for users in a variety of industrial sectors that pursue for big work piece, high precision, heavy weight demands. With the vertical clamping mechanism, the spindles of vertical turning lathes are also located behind the chuck, while some may be belt-driven, and some may be other types of driving mechanisms.
