Swiss Type Lathe

A Swiss type lathe is a specific design of lathe providing extreme accuracy and precision standard and that process turning tasks in a specific way. A Swiss-style lathe holds the work piece with both a collet and a guide bushing. The collet locates behind the guide bushing, and the tools sit in front of the guide bushing, which normally holds stationary on the Z axis. To cut lengthwise along the part, the tools would move in and the material itself will move backwards and forth-wards along the Z axis. This design of action allows all the work to be done on the material near the guide bushing where it is more rigid, making them ideal for working on slender work pieces. Normally, the Swiss type lathes are also commonly known as the Swiss screw machines, Swiss automatic lathes, and Swiss turning centers. The Swiss type lathe is different from the traditional lathe models in a specific feature. That is, the holding mechanism or collet that holds a bar stock will not be exposed directly to the lathe bed and the tooling. With this particular configuration, it provides this specific machine tool a number of benefits over the traditional lathe models.

Naming of the machinery
Normally, the Swiss type lathes are also commonly known as the Swiss screw machines, Swiss automatic lathes, and Swiss turning centers. The Swiss type lathe is different from the traditional lathe models in a specific feature. That is, the holding mechanism or collet that holds a bar stock will not be exposed directly to the lathe bed and the tooling. With this particular configuration, it provides this specific machine tool a number of benefits over the traditional lathe models.

Widely applied but still focused in sectors.
Although the applications of Swiss type lathe machines are wide and profound, there are mainly two industrial sectors which are the biggest two customers in the market. Those two sectors are the medical and electronics sectors. 

Guide bushing
Normally speaking, conventional lathe models tend to utilize guide bushing design. The goal of the guide bushing is to provide an additional support to stock material when the part is processed or turned. As a result, this guide bushing is fitted closely and surely, but not tightly to surround the bar-stock materials. 

Support mechanism
The support of this bar-stock material indicates that the functionalities of the guide bushing act in a similar fashion as steady-rest does on carriages of traditional lathe machines. The Swiss type lathes usually hold a better tolerance on the parts because the turning operations would be conducted closely to the guide bushing, and the guide bushing grants rigidity to turned parts because of the fact that a very small part of the stock will be exposed if they have left the bushing. Until such stage, the turning tools have been engaged, and the guide bushing provides significant rigidity to the stock. Such machine types are significantly well-adapted to holding a tight tolerance for the manufacturing of certain objects. Although many machining tasks a Swiss type lathe do can be also achieved by turn and mill machine, the latter is a more general model of lathes that can deal with a wider applications. Due to the narrower application, many of the industrial manufacturers choose to use turn and mill machine to deal with the same order requests instead of buying a Swiss type machine. 

Turn and mill machine
Based on the functionality, a turn and mill machine is also known as a CNC turning center, which is a machine tool capable of both turning and milling functions and rotates a work piece on an axis of rotation to perform various, machining operations such as cutting and turning. These kind of machining tasks are conducted with tools that are applied to the work piece and to create an object with symmetry with the axis which is driven by the primary spindle. 

Categorization
Conventionally, in usual circumstances, turning machines are categorized into two main types according to the way that clamp the work pieces. Those are vertical lathe and the horizontal counterparts.

Vertical turn and mill machine 
For the vertical version, the work piece is clamped vertically and the cutting tool is thus installed the same direction so that the machining is conducted vertically. This way the clamping is much more stern and fixed due to the gravity effect compared to the horizontal methodology and manufacturers of vertical turning machines usually made their vertical turning machines into great manufacturing facilities for users in a variety of industrial sectors that pursue for high precision, such as automotive industry, aerospace sector, sport equipment application, and other fields with larger size work pieces. 

Meanwhile, horizontal turn and mill machines are also a popular universal lathe models that can deal with a wide variety of machining tasks with the function of the power turret once installed onto the Y or Z axes.

There are conventional turrets, hydraulic turrets, servo turrets, and power turrets. All of them can release different kind of strength unto the work pieces as well as the installed axis, granting great performance.
